"....vision to see the future and the wisdom to prepare for it...."
Joseph R. Leary
On August 29, 1962 the charter for DPL Federal Credit Union was granted. DPL Federal Credit Union was issued charter number 15185 by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In our request for a charter it was stated that our goal was "to make more credit available to people of small means for provident and productive purposes through the national cooperative system, thereby helping to stabilize the credit structure of the United States."
Our purpose for being was and remains service. Credit Unions were originally founded as humanitarian and philanthropic agencies where members working together could solve their problems relating to obtaining credit. The credit union's motto reflects this history; Not for profit, Not for Charity, But for Service. Within our first year of operation payroll deduction began, emphasizing the importance of systematic savings. Subsequently, DPL Federal Credit Union established interest rates and operational policies, obtained required insurance and bond coverage, and joined local and national professional organizations.
Our original field of membership was employees of Delaware Power and Light Company who worked in or are paid in Wilmington, Delaware; members of this credit union who are retired as annuitants by the Delaware Power and Light Company from the above employment and retain their membership in the credit union; employees of this credit union and members of their immediate families; and organizations of such persons.
As our sponsor company grew, we expanded to provide our members with additional services. We now provide financial services to employees of Delmarva Power and Light Company, the Hercules Company, the News Journal Company, numerous select employee groups, and persons who live, work, worship, or attend school in, and businesses and other legal entities located in the City of Wilmington, Delaware.
DPL Federal Credit Union, like all credit unions, differs from other financial institutions in that we are a cooperative association organized for the sole purpose of providing services for our members. The founders of the credit union movement emphasized the importance of democratic control, stressing member participation. Their goal was to achieve economic democracy through self-help. Our Board of Directors consists of volunteers elected by our membership at our annual meeting held every January.
Our credit union has grown in excess of eighty million dollars in assets. We have remained true to the basic objectives, cooperative pooling of savings and reasonable rates on loans. Self-help, cooperation, and democracy are the guiding principles of credit unions. DPL Federal Credit Union strives to combine cooperation and service with the high standards of professional business management.
